After the news that former US President Joe Biden has an aggressive form of prostate cancer, I would encourage all men over 50 (over 45 if black or with a family history) to get their PSA tested. Trans women should also be tested.
PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen test is a simple blood test which gives a score which could indicate prostate cancer. I had mine tested routinely with my cholesterol and other routine screening.
My prostate cancer was identified by routine PSA testing as I had zero symptoms.
Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among men in many western countries1. It is however treatable with a variety of interventions.
I have spoken about my diagnosis and experiences on the PC-PEP podcast as well as on a webinar for Prostate Canada.
Since being diagnosed and treated and having a “remarkable recovery” according to my surgeon I have been committed to encouraging men to:
- Get their PSA tested
- Seek mental health help if diagnosed
- Find community with others experiencing prostate cancer
- Work on prehabilitation and rehabilitation for better short and long term outcomes
Most of these can be achieved through the PC-PEP program which I highly recommend. I completed the program and am still involved to try to help others.
